How did you come up with the idea?
The idea of the comic came from doing thumbnails for our show "WhiteBoard Stories". There was a point where I started to mix in real life backgrounds to the WhiteBoard characters and I really liked the style of it. Neither Lyle or I could draw, but we would talk about making a web comic of some sort. This art style would fix the problem of not knowing how to draw and give our comic a unique look.
What influenced the characters and stories?
We get a lot of ideas from different places. I really liked the idea of everyone in the "real world" treating the two paper characters as normal people. This dynamic has been seen in a lot of television shows and moves, like "Ted" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks". I wanted this type of world because I wanted the stories to easy reflect people's life experiences. It would give our comic a "We are all different in our own ways, but life kind of blends everything together", type of feel.
I also wanted to keep the characters small and scaled everything else to be humongous for a number of reasons. The uppity artsy reason is that I wanted to convey how little they are in the grand scheme of things. Like the feeling someone gets when they look up at the night sky that is filled with never ending stars. The practical reason is that it would be a lot easier to get people to pose for pictures, if we never show people's faces then they will be less "embarrassed". I also thought that this perspective was interesting because people tend to look forward and are engulfed in the hustle and bustle. I thought this was my little way of advising people to slow down and look around more often, maybe you'll see something interesting. This kind of perspective is also seen in a lot of popular movies and television shows, "A bugs life, Tom and Jerry, Rugrats"
